You Are Crucial To Pet Diagnosis

byAlma Abell

You realize something is “off” with your pet. A little keen attention can help you aide your veterinarian in making an effective Pet Diagnosis. Cats, in particular, are elusive patients. Once their symptoms are full blown they may extremely ill. Here are some changes that say “Vet, please!”

Changes in eating/drinking. Your cat may be drinking and eating less or have spiking interest in food or water. Both could be signs of illness. Taking careful note of your cat’s intake may be difficult in a multi-pet home, but it is worth the trouble to isolate their dishes or move them to a place where they can be monitored. This can help your veterinarian diagnose problems like diabetes and kidney disease.

Outgo changes. Are your cat’s bowel movements regular- no change in place, amount, smell, and consistency? A change like suddenly going outside the litter box could uncover a problem with parasites, an infection, or a host of other disorders. Cats are susceptible to urinary tract problems, so watch for your cat trying to urinate suddenly, often, and in unusual places. Also note any sounds of distress which accompany urination or bowel movements.

Vomiting. Most cat owners have seen an occasional case of vomiting. However, vomiting right after eating, or ongoing vomiting over several hours, may mean your cat is suffering from a blockage, poisoning or other problems. If your cat also has other symptoms then it is time to call the vet.

Pet me, pet me not. A cat which sits on your lap when well may take to hiding in the closet when ill. An aloof cat may stay closer to you than ever before. Watch carefully for changes like this in behaviour – a clear signal of pain or discomfort.

Coughing. A persistent cough may accompany many illnesses. If there are also signs of real discomfort or the cough is continuous, call the vet. If your cat’s gums are looking a bit blue, or he is having trouble breathing, immediate attention is a must.

Watching for these signs will help you get your feline friend to the vet in a timely manner as well as help your vet determine what tests are best to get the correct Pet Diagnosis. A facility like Crosspointe Animal Hospital will have on site diagnostic equipment and a caring, well-trained staff to deal with the problem quickly and as comfortably as your cat deserves.
