While nearly all cover of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third party candidates. These parties represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.
As a non-partisan news source, Wikinews has impartially reached out to these candidates, throughout the campaign. The most recent of our interviews is Laurens, South Carolina‘s John Taylor Bowles. Mr. Bowles is running with the endorsement of the National Socialist Order of America, a Minnesota-based Neo-Nazi party created after a recent rift in the National Socialist Movement.

American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) announced plans Friday to shut down about 1,100 of its dealerships, in an effort to evade bankruptcy and lower its expenditures.
GM’s move comes a day after Chrysler, another U.S. car maker, released a list of 789 dealerships that it was closing. Unlike Chrylser, GM will not publicly announce the dealerships that it intends to shut down. Instead, dealerships whose franchises won’t be renewed after October of next year will receive a private letter telling them of the decision.
At the moment, GM has 6,246 dealers in the U.S. It intends to reduce that number to 3,605 by the end of 2010. GM said the dealerships that were to be closed are “underperforming and very small sales volume U.S. dealers.”
“They’re dealerships that are in most cases hurting, losing money, and in danger of going out of business anyway,” said GM’s sales, service, and marketing vice president in a telephone conference. “It’s a move that people could argue should have been taken years ago but this leadership team had no choice but to do it today.”
The dealers that are to be closed represent 18% of the firm’s dealership network, but only 7% of GM’s 2008 revenue.

In May, periodical cicadas with 17 years life cycle emerged on the East Coast of the USA after underground development as juveniles since 1996. Researchers and scientists worked to map and study the rare wave, and the locals prepared for the noisy event. First recorded in 1666, the Magicicada septendecim species recently emerged in 1979, 1996, this year, with a next wave due in 2030.
This week, Wikinews interviewed Chris Simon, an ecology and evolutionary biologist at University of Connecticut, about the cicadas.
((Wikinews)) What caused your initial interest in periodical cicadas?
-
-
Chris Simon: As an undergraduate student, I was interested in the formation of species so when I went to graduate school I looked for a study organism that was likely to be in the process of forming new species. I chose periodical cicadas because they are broken up into reproductively isolated broods (or year classes). Reproductive isolation leads to speciation so I planned to study biochemical differences among the broods.
((WN)) You study the emergence of the periodical cicadas. What do you study? What observations are you making?
-
-
CS: We record exactly where each cicada population emerges (using GPS automated mapping and crowd sourcing). We record the presence or absence of each of the three morphologically distinct species groups of periodical cicadas (Decim group, Cassini group, and Decula group). We collect specimens for DNA analysis. We look for cicadas coming up one and four years early and late. We dig up cicada nymphs and monitor their growth rates.
((WN)) What equipment do you use?
-
-
CS: Nets, shovels, automated GPS recorders, cameras, laptop computers, automated DNA sequencers.
((WN)) Do you study the periodical cicadas with anyone else? What is their role?
-
-
CS: Yes, there are a large number of people studying periodical cicadas in my lab and in other labs. My lab is made up of Research Scientists, Postdoctoral Researchers, a technician, graduate students, and undergraduates. Research Scientist John Cooley is the leader of the GPS mapping project; he invented the automated GPS recorder; he built our crowd-sourcing website, and he is instrumental in public outreach. Postdoctoral research David Marshall also participates in the mapping project and leads the part of the research related to the mapping of stragglers. John and Dave and Technician Kathy Hill all study periodical cicada mating behavior and conduct mating and hybridization experiments. One of my graduate students Beth Wade has participated in the nymph collections and will soon start genetic work involving genome wide association mapping designed to locate genes related to life cycle. My graduate student Russ Meister is studying the genes of the bacterial endosymbionts of cicadas. My current undergraduate honors student Erin Dwyer is also studying the development of Magicicada nymphs and is helping to design a lab exercise for college students around the eastern US to do the same. Many of my past undergraduate students have studied the biochemical genetics and development of periodical cicadas. See the Simon Lab website.
-
-
CS: We are collaborating with Teiji Sota at the University Kyoto and Jin Yoshimura at Shizuoka University in Japan. They are studying the phylogeography of Magicicada. We are collaborating with John McCutcheon of the University of Montana who is studying the endosymbiont genomes.
-
-
CS: We are also collaborating with ecologists Rick Karban and Louie Yang, both professors at UC Davis who have an interest in cicada population dynamics and nutrient cycling in the ecosystem.
((WN)) You studied the periodical cicadas in 1979 and 1996 too. What changes with time?
-
-
CS: I have studied periodical cicadas since I was a student back in 1974. What changes with time is increased human development constantly shrinking the patch size of cicada populations.
((WN)) What are your thoughts on the long life span of the periodical cicadas? Why could it be so? What advantages and what disadvantages does it have?
-
-
CS: Most or all cicadas have long life cycles compared to your typical annual insect. Examples have been found of two-year to 9-year cycles in different species. Periodical cicadas evolved an even-longer life cycle and I think that part of this relates to the evolution of their synchronized life cycles and peculiar safety-in-numbers strategy for survival. To become synchronized, periodical cicadas had to evolve an exact length life cycle and all adults would have to appear in the same year. Because the nymphs grow at different rates underground, a longer life cycle and a way of counting years must have evolved so that the individuals that get to the last nymphal (underground juvenile) stage first would wait long enough for all other individuals in the population to become ready to emerge.
((WN)) News reports mention this is ‘Brood II’ of the periodical cicadas. What are the distinctive features of this specific species and what is its full scientific name?
-
-
CS: The same species exist in multiple broods. No species is restricted to Brood II. The three species present in Brood II are: Magicicada septendecim, M. cassini, and M. septendecula. These same three species are found in every 17-year brood (except the farthest north which only has M. septendecim).
((WN)) At what depth do the cicadas juveniles live underground?
-
-
CS: Most live within the top foot of soil but some have been found deeper. We do not know if they go deeper in winter. We need to do much more digging to understand the nymphs.
((WN)) How do people prepare for the cicada emergence?
-
-
CS: Of course various people prepare in different ways. Ideally, everyone prepares by studying information available on the web (especially on our websites Magicicada Central and Magicicada.org).
((WN)) Do cicadas affect transport in the local area?
-
-
CS: No, not really. Occasionally individuals can be seeing flying across highways and sometimes they smash into cars.
((WN)) Do cicadas usually stay outside or do they also invade houses too?
-
-
CS: They stay outside. One might accidentally fly in through an open window but that would be rare.
((WN)) What do the cicadas eat?
-
-
CS: Cicadas suck xylem fluid (the watery fluid coming up from the roots of plants) in deciduous forest trees and herbs. Essential amino acids in the cicada diet are supplied by their bacterial endosymbionts. There are two species of endosymbionts. One makes 8 essential amino acids and one makes two essential amino acids.
((WN)) Do cicadas damage crops or city vegetation? What damage?
-
-
CS: Cicadas do not chew leave so they do not damage crops like other insects. They can inflict some damage by their egg laying. Cicadas lay eggs in pencil-sized tree branches. If there are not enough branches available, too many female cicadas may lay eggs in a single branch weakening it and making it susceptible to breakage by wind. This can sometimes cause damage in fruit orchards. If the branches break, the eggs die so this behavior is selected against by natural selection.
((WN)) Thank you.

CS: You’re welcome. I am happy to have this opportunity to communicate with your readers!

Some people are apprehensive about buying a home for the first time. However, a helpful mortgage company makes all the difference. There are many different loan products, and mortgage lenders guide people in the right direction. It is always a good idea to be prepared when meeting with lenders. Be sure to bring all the requested documentation to the initial meeting.
The most important information the mortgage lender needs is verification of income and employment. They want to see tax returns and pay stubs. Further, lenders want to know about other available assets. Checking and savings account statements are required. Additionally, the first time home buyer in Tucson should bring proof of any IRA’s or other investment accounts. percent of their income on debt.
Any first time home buyer in Tucson needs to learn about different mortgage products. A fixed rate mortgage is an option that ensures the payments stay the same. Individuals are better able to budget knowing what they have to pay every month. Fixed rate mortgages have slightly higher interest rates, but individuals can refinance after a year or so. Usually, homes are financed over thirty years. Mortgages with a shorter life span usually have higher monthly payments.
The adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) has fixed rates for a certain time period. At the end of the time period, interest rates start going up annually. Some people prefer an ARM because they get a lower mortgage payment initially. Homeowners are able to refinance if they can’t make the increasing payments. The VA loan allows qualifying veterans to purchase a home costing up to $412,000 without a down-payment. Further, it is easier to qualify for a VA loan than some other products. The most important thing is qualifying for a loan product that meets all your needs. There is nothing like the joy of owning a home for the first time.

In an interview on ESPN Radio, Pete Rose admitted to hosts Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann that he “bet on [his] team every night” and admitted that the Dowd Report was correct in its assessment.
Pete Rose was given a lifetime ban from any involvement in Major League Baseball in 1989. Rose accepted the lifetime ban in exchange for not returning a finding of fact that Rose did indeed bet on baseball. He initially indicated to MLB commissioner Bud Selig and in his book My Prison Without Bars that he did bet on Major League Baseball games, but that he never bet against his team or used his betting to influence the outcome of any game. The Dowd report concurs with this statement from Rose.
Rose acknowledged his betting in the hopes that Selig would reinstate Rose and thus make him eligible for a number of accolades of which, to this point, he had been deprived. However, Selig refused to reinstate him despite his confession. Among those accolades include a formal retirement of his uniform number 14 and induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. While his number cannot formally be retired, no player since Rose’s retirement has worn the number, and it is unlikely that it will be worn again by any player on the Cincinnati Reds.
Rose appeared on the Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio as part of promotion for an exhibit at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati detailing the baseball career of Rose. He said that “I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in my team. I did everything in my power every night to win that game.”

Federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald announced on Friday that he would introduce new evidence in the perjury and obstruction of justice case against former Vice Presidential chief of staff Lewis “Scooter” Libby.
One of the new pieces of evidence consists of handwritten notes that Vice President Dick Cheney left on the margins of ambassador Joseph Wilson‘s OpEd column questioning the administration’s handling of evidence regarding weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the run-up to the Iraq war. Fitzgerald charged that “those annotations support the proposition that publication of the Wilson Op Ed acutely focused the attention of the Vice President and the defendant – his chief of staff – on Mr. Wilson, on the assertions made in his article, and on responding to those assertions.” Fitzgerald describes the notes as reflecting “the contemporaneous reaction of the Vice President to Mr. Wilson’s Op Ed article” and views the relevance of these notes as “establishing some of the facts that were viewed as important by the defendant’s immediate superior.”
In the margins of Wilson’s article Cheney wrote a series of questions about the legitimacy of Wilson’s CIA-sponsored trip to Niger: “Have they done this sort of thing before? Send an Amb. [sic] to answer a question? Do we ordinarily send people out pro bono to work for us? Or did his wife send him on a junket?”
Lea Ann McBride, spokesperson for the Vice President, declined to comment on the publishing of the notes, but stressed that the Office of the Vice President continues to cooperate with the investigation.

What options do females have for female enhancement? There are breast enhancement methods, libido improvement tactics, and fertility enhancement products.
What Methods Do Women Have For Breast Enhancement?
Pills and Lotions
Pills and lotions now come together in smart packages that combine breast enhancement from the inside out and the outside in. Easy-to-swallow pills and safe lotions are applied ingested and applied to the breasts, respectively. Oftentimes, these combination packages cost $60 or less per month, sometimes even as low as $30 per month. That s less than $1 per day for breast enhancement. Now, the efficaciousness of these packages is questionable, so sometimes women turn to more serious methods, like surgery.
Breast Augmentation Procedures

Breast implants is becoming very pass . Silicone isn t the only thing that can be used to increase bust size nowadays. There are stem cells, Botox, and more. The new methods of breast enhancement are breaking the barriers of the plastic surgery universe.
Fat Transfer With Stem Cells
Breast reconstruction is sometimes done this way after a breast cancer surgery, or breast surgery of another kind. Fat cells and stem cells can get harvested straight from the abdomen and injected into the breasts. That s a very natural way of getting your breasts larger, and it s at least much more natural than an artificial substance being injected, like silicone. This is a great option for women who have no interest in getting breast implants.
Weight Loss Breast Reconstruction
This sounds like a great double whammy choice. Excess tissue from the abdomen, sometimes removed from stomach surgery with obese women, has been put into their breasts. They get a two-for-one deal. They get a reduced stomach size and an enhanced breast size. They ll look like new women after it s all said and done. This option is very appealing on the surface, but you have to be morbidly obese to quality for the surgery.
Silicone Breast Implants
The Pastry Bag job is one of the best ways to insert silicone breast implants. It was invented by Dr. Keller. Today, almost 20% of all breast implant procedures involving silicone gel use the Keller Funnel. He knew there had to be a better way to insert huge, already-filled implants rather than attempting to push them through tiny incisions with just a finger, which was the procedure that was standard at the time.
Botox Breast Augmentation
Botox in your boobs sounds kind of weird, right? It actually makes sense though. It has two big perks. There is less pain after the operation, and there is a cosmetic result that s faster too. The procedure is just like any other standard breast augmentation procedure.
So, as a woman, you have lots of options for female enhancement. You can even take pills that purport to help with a low libido, if you have a low sex drive. These pills may not be proven through extensive studies though, so watch out, because they could have unintended side effects. Their effects aren t known long-term.

In the United States, a suspended Pennsylvania state trooper has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his girlfriend’s estranged husband.
Kevin Foley, 43, faces a mandatory life sentence without parole for slashing to death John Yelenic, a Blairsville dentist who was in the final stages of divorcing his wife, Michele. Foley’s attorney said he plans to appeal the decision. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.
Foley previously said he “loathed Dr. Yelenic” and asked another fellow trooper to help kill him. During his testimony, which lasted several hours, Foley claimed he was joking and had no true intention of carrying out the threat, but the Indiana County jury rejected that defense after about six hours of deliberations.
John Yelenic was found dead in his home on April 13, 2006, one day before he was planning on signing his divorce papers. Charges were brought against Foley in September 2007, more than 17 months after the murder.
Foley, who had been on suspension from the Pennsylvania State Police, was himself the final witness to take the stand Wednesday in the trial. Foley insisted he was innocent during his testimony, and even made jokes that the jury laughed at on a few occasions.
“I never made a threat with the intention of carrying it out,” Foley said under cross-examination by the prosecution.
When Senior Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek pressed Foley for what was funny about asking another state trooper to help him kill Yelenic, Foley answered, “There isn’t any joke. It’s just my personality, my behavior (with co-workers).”
Prosecutors said Foley killed Yelenic after going to the dentist’s house to confront him over the terms of the divorce. Prosecutors claim Foley slashed Yelenic several times with a knife and pushed his head through a small window. Yelenic bled to death.
“John has his justice tonight,” Mary Ann Clark, a cousin of Yelenic, told MSNBC. “John deserved this; he was the most wonderful person in the world. He died the most horrible death and tonight, this is his night. The system worked.”
Foley had been living with Michele Yelenic for two years at the time of the homicide. Prosecutors previously said Foley and Michele helped perpetuate rumors that Dr. Yelenic molested their son. John and Michele Yelenic had been separated in 2002. Michele Yelenic stood to collect Dr. Yelenic’s estate and a US$1 million life insurance policy, and could lose about $2,500 a month in support if the divorce was finalized, a Pennsylvania grand jury previously determined.
Michele Yelenic, who has not appeared at the trial, may face legal action herself, media reports indicated. A sentencing hearing for Foley is scheduled for June 1.

Plastic surgeon to the stars Dr. Frank Ryan has died in a car accident at age 50. It is reported that the Jeep Ryan was driving crashed over the side of the Pacific Coast Highway and landed on rocks. Lifeguards were first on the scene and unsuccessfully tried to rescue Ryan. It is thought that no other vehicle was involved in the incident.
Dr. Ryan, a celebrity in his own right, performed plastic surgery on several stars including Janice Dickinson, Gene Simmons, Shauna Sand and Adrianne Curry. He appeared on several television shows and became one of the first people to perform plastic surgery on television in 1995.
A representative for Janice Dickinson released a statement about the death of Ryan. She said “Janice is deeply, deeply anguished! She is stunned and wants the world to know what a genius Dr. Ryan was.”
Ryan was traveling with his pet dog at the time of the crash; the dog was found seriously injured in the ocean and was transported to a local veterinarian. Dr. Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene.
