Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.
As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.
“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.
Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.
According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.
At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.
At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.
One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.
Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.
It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

If you’re looking at active adult retirement communities, you aren’t alone. Over seventy-five million aging boomers will be looking to move from the homes they raised their children in to communities that cater to their changing needs in the next few years. Because builders now realize just how popular 55+ communities are, you may find yourself looking at more choices than you thought existed.
To find the right community for you, be sure you do your homework and pay attention to details when ‘window shopping’ active adult communities. Here are some tips to help you stay on track and eliminate some of the confusion:
Location, location, location.
Narrow down your search to the areas you would really like to put down your roots for the next several years – if not the rest of your life. You can start with websites that will give you an excellent overview. Do searches for active adult communities in various regions of the country to get in idea of what’s available.
Know What You Want

There is a gap between what you want and what you need when you’re looking at active adult retirement communities. The beauty of it is that when you’re buying a retirement home, you can usually focus on some wants because you no longer have to worry about college funds, etc. Make a list of things you enjoy doing, such as golf, tennis or swimming as well as a list of what you want to have easy access to such as malls, restaurants or family members. Prioritize your list – not many active adult communities will have everything you want within your budget, which brings us to:
What Can You Spend?
Active adult communities range widely in price, so investigate all options from renting to owning. Ownership also has options, including communities with commons fees that cover various amenities.
Visit and Take Notes
Nothing gives you a feel for an active adult retirement community like being there. Check out the view, the amenities and the features. Talk to residents and see what activities they are involved in and what they like about the area. Take notes – after looking at several active adult communities they will start to run together. What is security like? Many of today’s active adult communities are gated communities with security patrols. Be sure to ask.
Convenience is Key
Transportation, groceries and major shopping centers should all be considerations. Having great restaurants and attractions isn’t worth much if you can’t get to them easily. Health care services are also important to residents of 55+ communities. If you have to drive an hour to the nearest decent-sized hospital, you’re giving up an important element in case of emergencies.
Narrow it Down
After you’ve reviewed several active adult communities, start weeding out the ones that don’t meet your requirements. Make a second or third visit to the top three or four for more in-depth information and to look at specific homes. From here, it’s up to you to make that final choice. If you’ve followed these steps, you should be able to find the right active adult retirement community for you.

Monday, March 19, 2012Hawker, Canberra — Coming off a national championship win for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) men’s open team in mid-February, Australia men’s national softball team representatives Nick Norton and Adam Folkard are getting ready for more softball later this year, including the Australian club championships to be held in Brisbane in June.
Folkard and Norton have both won the World Championships and have each won a total of ten national championships with the ACT side. They are both named to the current men’s national team, which has roughly thirty players, and believe they are likely to survive the December cut down to eighteen players who will represent Australia at next year’s World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand.
The World Championship is one of the two most prestigious available to male softball players. The other is the International Softball Congress, an event Folkard and Norton have both competed at.
As national team representatives, there are a lot of expectations for them. In Australia, there is almost no financial support for the men’s game so they must cover most of their own costs, including travel to and from international competitions. According to Folkard’s father, these costs can be prohibitive. In one year, when Folkard was a representative on the men’s U18, U23 and Open team, it cost A$15,000 for travel and other expenses just for Folkard. When costs for bringing family members such as Folkard’s sisters to major international tournaments, the costs were even higher. Folkard, his father and Norton all joked this cost his father an investment property to allow Folkard to continue to compete at the highest level. Both Folkard and Norton currently work as tradesmen to support softball playing.
Beyond money, the national team requires players to be actively involved in wider softball community. Players must represent a club at the club championships in Brisbane if they want to retain a spot in the squad. Folkard plays for a Western Australian club and Norton plays for a Sydney based club, driving down from Canberra to play every Sunday during the season.
Folkard and Norton have both played softball at the highest level in the United States, where the men’s game is not yet fully professionalized but still presents more opportunities for players than are available at home. For several years, Folkard has gone to the United States for three-month stints, playing for teams in Chicago, Pennsylvania, and New York. One side he played was sponsored by Ernst and Young. Folkard currently plays for a Canadian side and has been trying to convince Norton, whom he has grown up playing softball with, to join him like Norton has done one previous season. According to Folkard, playing with a North American club has certain advantages. The clubs pay for his travel to and from Australia, and pay for Championship rings. When asked how North American clubs sign Australian players, he said they follow men’s softball in Australia and call up players to offer contracts. Australian men’s players gain additional exposure to potential clubs when they compete, with some sides approaching them during the North American season and seeking to contract them for the following season.
Both men would love the opportunity to play softball in the Olympics, but believe such an opportunity is unlikely. According to them, softball at the Olympics is a women’s game intrinsically linked to men’s baseball, and men’s softball is unlikely to ever be considered on the programme as a result.
Folkard and Norton both play for the same club in the ACT territory club competition. Their team has secured a grand final berth for the match in ten days. They are waiting to find out who they will play against based on a match this weekend. Both have previously won this competition.

Any operation that’s distributed inside the Earths atmosphere is subjected to the climate and consequently the weather systems that occur inside that region. Aerial Photography may be stricken by the weather in 2 ways in which, first should you want to you need to be able to get within the air and second the artist must be able to get the pictures he needs.
It doesnt matter if the craft involved may be a chopper or a high winged light-weight craft. Sturdy winds or gusts might place the craft outside its in-operation limits and so create it unsafe to fly. Within the associated United Arab Emirates, this example isn’t uncommon however its possibilities of occurring may be minimized if the craft is found at a field with several runways in numerous directions. This enables the pilot to minimize the current of air part and profit of a head wind on takeoff and landing.
Once the craft is within the air the weather will cause an entire new vary of issues for the artist. The most issues that will be encountered whereas endeavor aerial photography and Aerial Event Photography include:

Low cloud, mist and fog.
This causes the plain drawback of being unable to envision the bottom and therefore the options that you’re attempting to photograph. This can be seemingly to cause issues for nearly all sorts of aerial photography.
High cloud, poor light.
This situation is common throughout the United Arab Emirates and though it restricts some aerial photographic operations its have an effect on others square measure tiny. For instance, Survey Photography undertaken for the needs of observance traffic or pipeline work could also be able to operate in these conditions. However, Oblique Aerial Photography undertaken for promoting functions would most likely not be undertaken in these conditions. This can be in the main as a result of the cloud shadows which might create the pictures unattractive and provides a dappled result.
Haze Science Articles, poor horizontal visibility
Haze is one amongst the largest issues for Oblique Aerial Photography as a result of it will cut back visibility right down to many kilometers once the sky is evident and therefore the weather appearance spectacular from the bottom.
High winds.
High winds will create it terribly troublesome to position the craft at a site. This can be very true once a particular read is needed or whereas photographing position sensitive sites like racing Event Photography. Throughout this way of Event Aerial Photography, it’s important to not re-evaluate the race course whereas the horses square measure out and if the wind needs the craft to crap on the course it should not be attainable to urge the shots needed.
It is obvious the weather features a major influence on business aerial photography and should be monitored closely to require benefits of the proper conditions.

Australian federal member of Calare, Peter Andren died on Saturday after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was aged 61.
Mr Andren who had held the seat since being elected in 1996 had previously announced his intention to run for the senate after his electorate was changed for the 2007 federal election. After Mr Andren was diagnosed with cancer in July, he announced that he would be retiring from politics at the election.
Mr Andren’s 1996 campaign platform was based upon retaining services in regional Australia, particularly banking, health and telecommunications. Over the next 11 years, Mr Andren’s primary vote grew and at the 2001 and 2004 elections was elected without preferences, achieving a majority primary vote.
In 2001, Mr Andren disagreed with his electorate on refugees. The electorate supported the government’s tough stance but Mr Andren could not support the government’s border protection measures. Following this, a vicious letter-box campaign rose up saying “you might like Peter Andren … but you won’t like what he’s got to say about keeping our borders safe”.
Fellow NSW independent member, Tony Windsor said Mr Andren’s stance on asylum seekers was just one sign of his compassion and strong belief in human rights.
Mr Windsor described Mr Andren as the “conscience” of parliament. “Peter Andren was a true representative of the people of the Calare electorate, a man of the highest integrity and the conscience of the Parliament,” he said.
“He was subjected to vitriol from time to time within the Parliament over issues, but if he believed in something he stuck to it. He didn’t compromise and I think that’s a lasting legacy that Peter will leave.”
Prime Minister John Howard said despite having a difference of opinion with Mr Andren on many issues, he had a lot of respect for him.
“I respected his skills as a local member,” he said.
“Mr Andren and I frequently disagreed on major issues and he made no bones about that and I made no bones about it either but that didn’t stop me respecting him and acknowledging the tremendous work he did for his electorate.”
Labor leader Kevin Rudd described Mr Andren as a true independent.
“Peter Andren will be a great loss to the Australian parliament,” he said.
“He was a man of principle, a man of commitment, a man who was an absolute independent.”
Leader of the Greens, Bob Brown said Mr Andren was an example of how a politician should be.
“He was an exemplar of representative politics for his electorate and the people of Calare kept returning him with a bigger and bigger majority,” he said.
“[If] anybody ever asks me how a politician should be, I am going to say, ‘Look at the record of Peter Andren'”
“He was a great Australian representative and he is a great loss to this country.”
During his political career, Mr Andren fought the sale of Telstra, introduced a bill to allow MPs to opt-out of their generous superannuation schemes, opposed the Iraq war and campaigned on environmental issues.
Mr Andren was born at Gulargambone, near Dubbo in Western NSW in 1946. Before he entered politics Mr Andren worked as a teacher before moving into journalism. Mr Andren worked as a news producer in Sydney for the Seven and Nine networks, before moving back to regional NSW where he worked as the news editor for both Radio 2GZ and Prime Television.
Mr Andren is survived by his partner and two sons.

Reports say that O.J. Simpson, a former American football player is a suspect in a robbery that took place on Thursday night at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Simpson was not immediately arrested and was later released. He was not a guest at the hotel.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police (LVMPD) began to question Simpson and at least five other people, after they were accused of breaking into a room in the hotel, with at least one of the individuals holding a gun, but its not known if the room was a guest room.
Several sports memorabilia items, all previously belonging to Simpson, were reported to be stolen from the room, which was registered to sports memorabilia collector Alfred Beardsley, and reports say that when police found the items, Simpson claimed that they belonged to him. Among the items stolen is believed to be a suit that Simpson wore during his 1995 murder trial, an autographed item that had been signed by Joe Montana, and “never before released” version of Simpson’s book If I Did It. Simpson was found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
“When they talked to him, Simpson made the comment that he believed the memorabilia was his. We’re getting conflicting stories from the two sides,” said Jose Montoya, a spokesman for the LVMPD.
Reports say that Beardsley was going to sell the items and made plans to meet with someone on Thursday night who was interested in purchasing them. The unnamed individual, along with OJ claimed to be police officers and ordered Beardsley to turn over his cellular phone, which he refused. He then claims one of the men “roughed him up” before stealing every collectible in the room.
Police are expected to release a statement to the media later today.

The death of Scottish artist Alan Davie was announced on Sunday. Davie, 93, was known for his colourful abstract paintings.
Davie’s career also saw turns as a jeweler, a jazz musician, a lecturer, and a poet. Born in Grangemouth, near Falkirk, in 1920, he studied painting from 1938 to 40 at Edinburgh College of Art.

It’s an urge, an intensity, a kind of sexual need |

|
His father was a teacher who dabbled in art and his mother’s family was musically inclined. Upon seeing Coleman Hawkins performing in a music shop in Edinburgh, Davie borrowed £600 from his father to buy himself a saxophone. After serving in the Second World War, at which time he wrote much poetry later transcribed by his father, Davie toured with Scottish jazz bands.
Davie’s work was admired by the likes of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and David Hockney. Davie himself collected non-Western art and liked tattoos, graffiti, and ‘outsider art’. His final interview before death, with The Telegraph, gave an insight into how he viewed art: “It’s an urge, an intensity, a kind of sexual need[…] something I do from an inner compulsion, that has to come out.”
He initially avoided painting as a career at all, then spent several years earning money by other means whilst his paintings failed to sell. His exhibitions in the late 1950s, however, were highly successful and launched his career. He was in the habit of choosing titles for his art only after completion.
Despite a strong presence owing to his lengthy red beard and off-beat humour, he was shy; his international fame waned. Recent years have seen a revival of interest with price increases for his early art. London alone is host to three exhibitions this month including at the Tate.
Tate Britain calls Davie “one of the first British artists after the war to develop an expressive form of abstraction” producing “kaleidoscopic canvases[…] that the artist relates to his love of jazz”.
