• “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council requested on Tuesday that a picture be found on what many thought was the site of a previous hotel.

The Proposed Elmwood Village Hotel would be placed on the intersection of Elmwood and Forest. It was suspected by residents and business owners in the area that hotel once stood in the same spot.

The Elmwood Village hotel is a proposed development by Savarino Construction Services Corp. In order for the project to proceed, at least five buildings (1119-1121 Elmwood) would need to be demolished. All five houses are currently occupied by businesses and residents.

After some research, a freelance journalist writing for Wikinews was able to determine that there was never a hotel on the proposed Elmwood Village Hotel site. However; there was a temporary hotel located on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest.

Buffalo was the host of the Pan-American Exposition from May 1 until November 2, 1901. It was a fair designed to feature the latest in technology, including electricity. There was a midway, athletic events, and had African, Eskimo, and Mexican villages. However; what is likely the most famous event that took place at the exposition was the assassination of then President William McKinley on September 6, 1901. He was shot by Leon Czolgosz just outside the Temple of Music and died eight days later while in the home of John Milburn on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Just a short time later, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated on September 14, 1901 at the Wilcox House on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Nearly eight million people attended the exposition.

During that time several hotels and rooming houses were built around the exposition including The Elmwood at 717 Elmwood, the Hotel Elmhurst at Forest and Lincoln Parkway, Hotel Gibbs 1005-1021 Elmwood, the R. Palmerton Merritt at 441 Forest and The Norman at 422 Forest. None of these hotels or rooming houses exist today.

Probably the most famous hotel that was built during the exposition was the Statler’s Pan-American Hotel built by Ellsworth Milton Statler A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained the only known reproduction photo of the hotel [pictured at the top]. The hotel stood on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, had 2,100 sleeping rooms and accommodations for 5,000. At the time, the Statler was the largest hotel [based on the number of rooms] ever constructed. It was also the largest temporary hotel. It was three stories high, plastered on the inside, made mostly of wood and was covered with ornamental staff on the outside, which made it semi-fireproof. Every room was an outside room and was well lighted and ventilated. It was located within one block of the exposition’s main entrance.

The Statler was built for only one thing, the exposition. Work began in 1900 and finished just before the beginning of the exposition. When the exposition ended in November, the hotel was taken down.

Maps from 1894 show that there was no hotel, let alone any buildings or houses on the intersection. However; research did show that the homes 1119-1121 Elmwood, the buildings that would be demolished to build the Elmwood Village Hotel, were built sometime before 1915 but were not on the intersection prior to 1902.

Based on research conducted at the Buffalo Historical Society, it was concluded that between the years of 1890 and 1902, no other major hotel existed in the area. In fact, research had shown that almost every hotel built in the area, existed only during the time of the exposition.

Research also indicated a hotel or a rooming house at 1089 Elmwood around 1901-1903. The only known name of the hotel was the John C. Hill Hotel. The hotel was in the house now called the Atwater House. The house was the first house to be built on the east side of the block.

The Atwater House is currently vacant and owner Pano Georgiadis wants to demolish it to expand his restaurant. The house was built by 1894 and the original owner and builder of the house is currently unknown. Its earliest known occupant was Edward Atwater who in 1862 founded the oil refinery company of Atwater & Hawes in Buffalo. The site of this company was recently uncovered in the Canal District during an archeological dig.

At the moment, current research does not show any connection between the two men.

The exposition was a commercial failure and what profit Statler did make on the hotel, went to build another temporary hotel for the 1904 St. Louis Exhibition. That hotel was successful and the profit made from it was used to build the first permanent Statler Hotel at 107 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. The hotel is no longer in operation, but small offices are currently operating in parts of the building.

Benefits Of Plastic Injection Molding

byadmin

If you have been involved in industrial production in any shape or form since the 1940s, you have heard about the process called plastic injection molding. Service of this type increasingly became common as a result of the technological advances made during World War II. Increased demand by the public for manufactured goods made inexpensively and quickly also affected the need to come up with more efficient production methods. The response from James W. Hendry (1921-2014) in 1946 was the screw plastic injection molding machine.

What Is Plastic Insert Molding?

A plastic injection molding service is a company or supplier that takes several different components (They can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic.), lines them up in a set pattern in a specifically designed molding cavity and inject them with a thermoplastic substance. The result is a new, strong, single unit.

Why Choose an Injection Insert Molding Service?

Companies have long preferred to employ an injection insert molding service in the manufacturing process for several reasons. Among the most stated motives are the following:

* It results in decreased labor and assembly costs when compared to the alternative methods of soldering or employing adhesives or fasteners* Everything can be molded in a single action rather than in several actions* The material required results in a savings over material costs because the amount is less. An injection insert molding service does not need as much or as heavy an amount of joining or adhesive material because the plastic addition eliminates the need for other fasteners and other devices required for attachment.* The resultant product is stronger due to the co-joining of the plastic and the various components* The resulting item is more reliable since the injection insert molding service ensures the parts are fixed firmly in the proper position. This is particularly important when it comes to medical devices and electrical units. They need to be highly resistant to shock and vibrations* The process allows for companies to have flexibility in design. They are able to combine various materials and create diverse configurations as required.* In the procedure, you can employ recycled materials such as plastic pellets with greater ease.

Companies have also found that it is inexpensive to retool. Conversion is easy with the resultant savings, including the use of recycled plastic pellets. Is it any wonder there are many companies out there willing to help you get started and/or supply you with their plastic injection molding service.

Finding the Right Plastic Injection Insert Molding Service

There are many different companies that offer you a plastic injection molding service. Be sure to check their credentials. Talk to those who have used their services and be sure to obtain samples of their work. Visit the company and be sure to see the products in action. The construction and mold design of the product is extremely important when dealing with insert moldings. Only after you have ascertained that the company is credible, reputable and delivers a quality product on time should you agree to work with them.

If you are seeking out a high quality, reliable plastic injection molding service, be sure to talk to the professionals at Aberdeen Technologies Inc. They can help you with a diversity that is known in the business. From helping you with your own designs to supplying you with products from their own molding operations performed in their GMP-compliant cleanroom, their team of experts can help you find the answers and/or the right molds. World Wildlife Fund: 75% of seafood species consumed in Singapore not caught sustainably

Wednesday, October 5, 2016

The Singaporean branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) published a guide yesterday critiquing the practices employed to catch seafood destined for sale in the country. According to the publication, three-quarters of the more than 40 species of seafood commonly consumed by Singaporean residents were obtained in a manner detrimental to environmental sustainability.

The guide, titled the Singapore Seafood Guide, lists fish species such as Indian threadfin, silver pomfret, and yellowbanded scad, all frequently used in Singaporean dishes, under its “Avoid” category. Highlighting the high rates at which these species are being fished and consumed, the WWF said, “Without collective and decisive action, these popular fish could disappear from Singapore’s menus within our lifetime.”

On her organization’s reasons for publishing the guide, WWF-Singapore CEO Elaine Tan stated, “We are squandering one of our greatest natural resources by failing to manage our fish stocks sensibly. As one of the biggest consumers of seafood in the world per capita, Singaporeans have a big role to play in protecting our oceans. The Seafood Guide empowers everyone in the supply chain to make conscious choices that prevent the further exploitation of fish stocks.” According to the WWF, an average Singaporean eats 22kg (about 48.5lb) of seafood annually, versus 20kg (44lb) average per person globally.

In conjunction with the launch of the guide, the WWF started the Sustainable Seafood Business Forum on Tuesday to promote action on the topic among seafood purveyors. An initiative which emerged from the forum was the Responsible Seafood Group, which counts amongst its members supplier Global Ocean Link and integrated resort Marina Bay Sands. All organizations involved in the group agree to standards on the sustainable sourcing of seafood as outlined by the WWF.

On Marina Bay Sands’ commitment to seafood sustainability, Kevin Teng, the resort’s Executive Director of Sustainability, said, “Since 2014, we have eliminated sharks fin from the restaurants we own and operate. At that time, we also started serving selected seafood sourced from suppliers that fish or farm responsibly, based on global seafood standards.”

Lucas Glanville, Executive Chef of Grand Hyatt Singapore, stated, “Our customers are demanding to know where their seafood comes from. Finding alternatives to endangered species on the red list and choosing to work with sustainable suppliers and their products has gone beyond being a corporate responsibility, and become a commercially viable decision for us”. According to the WWF, the hotel chain serves seafood compliant with its sustainability standards.

The WWF has compared Singapore’s population to that of Finland, whilst also highlighting the discrepancy in seafood sustainability practices in both countries. According to a report by the organization, 98% of seafood consumed in Finland meets WWF standards on sustainability.

Matti Ovaska, conservation officer for the WWF’s Finnish branch, elaborated on the country’s sustainability practices where seafood consumption is concerned, “Sustainability has become an everyday element in Finland’s seafood trade, and companies are very familiar with the origin of the fish they purchase. In addition, over one third of Finns use the seafood guide consciously to make better decisions”.

Top 25 Market Forecast Shows Real Estate Stabilizing

By Mike Colpitts

The Top 25 Housing Predictor U.S. Market Forecast for 2007 shows a growing trend of local real estate markets that are stabilizing with thirteen states represented in the annual forecast. Housing Predictor is an information driven website, providing independent local housing market forecasts for all 50 U.S. States.

Battling back from the headlines New Orleans, Louisiana is Housing Predictor’s # 1 pick to appreciate the most in 2007. Despite the loss of nearly half of its residents, the Big Easy has a booming real estate market that is growing almost daily and is forecast to appreciate 8.4% in 2007.

The fixer-upper has become the new major commodity in New Orleans real estate as investors move into the market to repair homes and apartments damaged in the wake of Hurricane Katrina more than at any other time in a natural disaster in the U.S. More than 150,000 homes were damaged or destroyed by Katrina, which hit in August of 2005.

The spirt of the people in New Orleans is becoming less tarnished in the aftermath of the storm. New Orleans has always had a spirit of revelry and showmanship, especially during Mardi Gras. It may have also been given a boost in the form of the New Orleans Saints NFL football team, which has had its best season in years.

Houston, Texas, a city which has been besieged by scandals with Enron and other companies is transforming into a strong real estate market for the first time in more than a decade. Houston is forecast by Housing Predictor to appreciate 7.3% in 2007 to place second in the forecast.

The nation’s southern states are under going the largest growth in history as a migration from colder northern states to the sun-belt quietly reaches near fever pitch. Arkansas, Alabama, Texas and Tennessee are adding more new residents than ever before. Little Rock, which was once a slumbering community has more new businesses moving into the area than ever and will hit 7.0% in home appreciation in 2007, according to Housing Predictor.

Nashville, Tennessee, recognized as the Music City is playing on its own good fortunes as a growing metropolitan area, which along with Odessa, Texas has some of the most affordable housing in the nation and will both hit 6.9% in appreciation by year’s end.

The Top 25 markets represent slightly more than a quarter of the nation’s states. All 13 states have local real estate markets that are appreciating strongly.

In the west, Washington state and Utah have real estate markets that are showing appreciation, which demonstrates how real estate unlike other investments is effected by local regional market economic and political factors.

In Albuquerque, New Mexico the sales of homes and condos had slowed for a few months only to pick back up again as more and more new employers moved to the area. Albuquerque is a growing urban center, which is forecast to appreciate another 6.5% in 2007.

But of all the places that made the annual Top 25 markets list Brownsville and Austin, Texas are two of the strongest U.S. real estate markets. Just a few short years ago after a high tech boom went bust Austin lost population, but a renewed economy and more computer companies moving into the area have pushed the city into a booming economy again and it will score a forecasted 6.1% in appreciation in 2007. Brownsville, which is in seventh place on the list is perhaps the best place to find the least expensive housing in an urban center in the U.S.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Following the first major snow storm of the season, several cars were reported to be ‘entrapped’ by slick ice in the seaside city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The ice was believed to be created when the snow, which fell during the night of December 9-10, was packed down by successive cars and trucks passing over it. By morning, several areas of the city had patches of slippery, low-traction crystalline water lying in wait for the next unsuspecting motor vehicle to pass over them. Soon enough, your correspondent witnessed cars which had slowed to a stop or were parked find that, try as they might, they were unable to move forward on the ice and were therefore stuck.

Luckily, most of the cars were able to extricate themselves after either slowly accelerating in a low gear, or ‘rocking’ the car back-and-forth to build up momentum. No one was reported injured, and the only damage believed to be done was the excessive wear and tear on the entrapped vehicles.

Former Iranian president Rafsanjani states Iran is enriching uranium

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad confirmed on Tuesday that the country has successfully enriched uranium from 164 of their centrifuges.

“I am officially announcing that Iran has joined the group of those countries which have nuclear technology. This is the result of the Iranian nation’s resistance. Based on international regulations, we will continue our path until we achieve production of industrial-scale enrichment,” Ahmadinejad said.

“Iran has put into operation the first unit of 164 centrifuges, has injected (the uranium) gas and has reached industrial production. We operated the first unit which comprises of 164 centrifuges, gas was injected, and we got the industrial output. We should expand the work of these machines to achieve a full industrial line. We need dozens of these units (sets totaling 164 centrifuges) to achieve a uranium enrichment facility,” said Iran’s former President, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, earlier today.

Ahmadinejad had said on Monday that he would release “good nuclear news which will be a source of pride for the whole Iranian nation” today and that reports from the media are part of the United States campaign involving “psychological warfare.”

“Nothing can stop our civil nuclear program as the Iranians are a courageous nation and not afraid of intimidations. We are not after atomic bombs,” added Ahmadinejad.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran began to test 20 centrifuges in March. Iran’s current enrichment is only to reactor-grade — around 3.5% of the isotope uranium-235. Uranium-235 has a natural abundance of 0.72% and is one isotope of uranium which is easily fissionable. In order to create a nuclear bomb, a few hundred metric tons of natural uranium must be used enriched above 90% of uranium-235. Experts have said that if Iran is going to attempt to make enough uranium-235 for a nuclear bomb, they would need to install a few thousand centrifuges in series or process the gas through the same set of centrifuges over 50 times.

On Wednesday, Mohamed ElBaradei, the President of the IAEA, will visit Iran to review the progression, if any, to Iran’s nuclear program and will release a report at the end of April.

The United States said that Iran is “moving in the wrong direction” in regards to its nuclear program and that if it continues its program, it will discuss the possibility of taking steps with the United Nations.

Washington DC is said to “be talking about the way forward with the other members of the Security Council and Germany about how to address this [Iran’s nuclear program],” according to White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

Is High Intensity Training Right For You?

Submitted by: Timothy Hill II

To determine whether or not high intensity training or HIT is right for you, you have to first learn what exactly it is. This is because knowing what it is for and what your limits are can allow you to have normal expectations of the HIT program and what you might accomplish from it. It is a form of strength training that came about to be known in the 70s by a man named Arthur Jones. He is also the founder of Nautilus. This specific type of training focuses mostly on the performance quality of weight lifting repetitions to getting to the point of muscular failure momentarily. With this training, it consists of the amount of weight, the number of repetitions being done, and the amount of time that the muscle has this tension put on it. All of this is used to maximize the muscle fibers within the body.

So what are the principles of this training program? The exercise done in this program is brief, intense, and done infrequently to get the best results. All of the exercises throughout the program were designed to be done with a high level of intensity and effort in order to stimulate the body for it to produce muscular strength and size in large amounts. A lot of people believe that this is the best method to use when you want to increase size and strength compared to many other methods out there. This program grows with you. The more strength you have, the more weight and resistance you will train with. You re basically giving your muscles the overload to pump them up faster and more intensely. This helps to stimulate improvements further into the program.

There are standards however since the human body can only exercise for so much, and for so long. This is why high intensity work outs are brief. Since the program is tough and relatively fast paced, the body needs time to recuperate afterwards. There is more emphasis on resting throughout this program than with many other programs out there. In the resting phase, the body is able to produce those hormones needed for muscle growth. Having a training schedule for any type of workout, especially HIT should allow you enough time in between training sessions to recover and rest without working out.

The basic thing that you need to know when doing this type of exercise is that you need to have a high level of effort and intensity. It can be brief and infrequent, but it has to be fast paced and intense for it to fully work. You do not have to do this work out daily, and absolutely must give your body time to rest. You want to avoid all bouncing, yanking, or jerking of the body and the machines during the weight training session. You should work at a fast, natural, and smooth pace while training to provide enough work out time but also so that nothing is pulled in the body. It should only take a few seconds to complete a repetition.

German BND claims U.S. exaggerated Iraq WMD claims

Sunday, November 20, 2005

One of the most important arguments in the run-up to the Iraq war made by Colin Powell in his United Nations speech and President Bush in his State of the Union address was that Iraq had an active biological weapons program and possessed mobile biological weapons labs. According to an investigation by the Senate Intelligence Committee, the main source for this information was an Iraqi defector codenamed Curveball who was a source for the German central intelligence agency BND.

Several German intelligence officials responsible for Curveball have now told the LA Times that the Bush administration and the CIA have repeatedly exaggerated his claims and ignored warnings of the BND that the source was unreliable. Recounting his reaction after seeing Powell’s United Nations speech one German intelligence officer said: “We were shocked. Mein Gott! We had always told them it was not proven…. It was not hard intelligence.” This corroborates reporting by the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit from 2003 and 2004 based on statements of unnamed senior German intelligence officials.

Nine months earlier, in May 2002, a fabricator warning was posted in Curveball’s file in U.S. intelligence databases. Powell was never warned that his United Nations speech contained material that both the DIA and CIA had determined was false, even though several people present at Powell’s CIA meetings were fully aware of this.

At this time German intelligence officers would not let the CIA meet directly with Curveball, but allowed a CIA doctor to draw blood samples. Questioning the validity of Curveball’s information in front of his CIA supervisor, the doctor was advised to “Keep in mind that this war is going to happen regardless of what Curveball said or didn’t say and the Powers That Be probably aren’t terribly interested in whether Curveball knows what he’s talking about.”

Shortly after Powell’s UN speech and several days before the invasion, United Nations weapons inspectors attempted to directly verify several key claims made by Curveball, but concluded that they were unsustainable. The White House insisted on its WMD claims based on Curveball’s information.

Even after the invasion, when more and more of Curveball’s accounts were shown to be pure fabrication, the CIA and the Bush administration relied on Curveball’s information. When U.S. forces discovered trucks with lab equipment and Curveball claimed that these were identical to the ones he has been reporting about, the CIA rushed to publish a White Paper claiming that these trucks were part of Saddam Hussein’s secret biological weapons program and Bush claimed publicly that “We found the weapons of mass destruction.” Several days later, twelve of the thirteen WMD experts who analyzed the trucks agreed that the equipment was not suited for biological weapons production, with the only dissenting voice coming from the author of the original White Paper.

The White Paper remains posted on the CIA website to this date, and President Bush has not yet retracted his statement that Iraq produced “germ warfare agents” made in his State of the Union address or his postwar assertions that “we found the weapons of mass destruction.”
