The Next Consortium of ITRI launches ‘RoboScooter’

Sunday, May 11, 2008

At the Pavilion of Taiwan Automotive Research Consortium during the AutoTronics Taipei 2008, in Taipei Time, the Next Consortium of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) unveiled a brand-new environmental-concept vehicle named “RoboScooter”. It was jointly designed by the Creativity Lab of ITRI, SYM Motors, and the Media Lab of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This announcement was approved by industrial, governmental, and academical executives, but not just in Taiwan.

The ability for R&D to manufacture the electronic vehicles and bicycles was concerning to several automobile-related industries. There was concern not only from several trade shows, but also international competitions related to the design after winning several prizes back in Taiwan to establish the industrial position and brand image of “Made in Taiwan”. Since several industries like automobile are transformed to high-value industries, “creativity” progressively became a key element before unveiling any new products.

As of this sector, Wen-jean Hsueh (ITRI Creativity Lab General Director) hoped companies could do proper transformations on its R&D nature from “Made in Taiwan” to “Created in Taiwan” for best practice. This not only echoed “OBM” theory discussed at 2007 Taiwan Brands’ Trend Forum but also blended with a key element of production – “creativity”.

On the other side of SYM Motors, to solve the transportation problem for TWTC Nangang, SYM Motors Taiwan imported manufacturing technology from Kinglong Bus Co., Ltd. to manufacture several 4th-cycle low floor buses and sell them to Chung-hsing Bus Co., Ltd. and Kwang-huang Bus Co., Ltd. In this launch, the SYM Motors Taiwan hope this vehicle is energy-efficiency, easily-parked, and has creative functions which can improve the transportation habits of individuals.

England’s elderly face human rights breaches in home care system

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

A report published today by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) finds that, in many cases, England’s home care system breaches the human rights of the elderly it is supposed to serve. The Close to home: older people and human rights in home care report is the result of a twelve-month investigation into care generally provided by local authorities.

Approximately half of those receiving home care, plus friends and family, providing evidence to the inquiry were satisfied with the quality of care provided. However, the report stresses that there are “systemic problems” arising from “a failure to apply a human rights approach to home care provision”. The report asserts that it is generally not the fault of individuals providing care, but serious problems exist as local authorities seem unaware of their obligations under the Human Rights Act and fail to commission, procure, and monitor care accordingly.

The report says articles two, three and eight of the European Convention on Human Rights are frequently being breached. These, respectively, cover an individual’s right to life, protection from inhumane and degrading treatment, and respect for dignity and personal independence. Criticisms include that care is not provided in a common-sense manner, and funding of care for the elderly is at lower levels than for younger people with similar problems and needs.

The EHRC’s investigation highlights a range of recurring complaints and attempts to identify the underlying causes; cost is repeatedly mentioned, with use of the private-sector leading to some local authorities offering a “one size fits all” service leaving many elderly feeling they are “a task to be undertaken” and have “little or no choice” as to help received, or when care workers visit. A failure to invest in care workers is noted, with significant responsibility and the wide range of skills required being rewarded with low pay and status; this, the report states, adversely impacts staff retention and, a high turnover of care workers can put the security of care recipients at-risk.

Within the wider investigation, a commissioned independent social report by The Arndale Centre conducted in-depth interviews with a cross-section of 40 elderly individuals receiving home care. As-stressed in the report, those selected were not on the basis of good, or bad, experiences with their – mainly local authority-provided – care. It highlights a widespread feeling amongst those interviewed that they are treated “like a number”, and that aspects of the care provided lead to, or fail to resolve, feelings of social isolation.

The Manchester-based Arndale Centre report concludes that, “[t]he general picture is of a wider home care system in which older people are noteffectively involved: which they do not understand, and which does not often make the extra effort required to involve them in ways tailored to their state of health and other needs”.

nobody to talk [to] face to face. Nobody will knock on that door,[…] a life of isolation.

A recurring theme in the responses of those interviewed is the social isolation that their home care is not adequately addressing. One male interviewee in his seventies who previously used a scooter to get about said in his interview, “I haven’t been out of the house now for about four weeks. I daren’t. The last time I went out on the scooter I hit the kerb and it frightened the living daylights out of me.” Another, an 85-year-old woman who lives alone, expressed sadness at her inability to do normal things, “I would love to go to town to do some shopping. I haven’t been to town for about two years… Wander round the town and have a cup of tea… I’d love that.”

The social isolation many elderly experience was summed up neatly by another woman in her eighties in her interview: “When you go now, I will maybe not talk to anybody till tomorrow; maybe the whole of tomorrow nobody to talk [to]… face to face. Nobody will knock on that door, that is it, a life of isolation.”

The EHRC, having commissioned this report in the face of funding changes and reform of the care system, intends to press for legislative changes to ensure those receiving care at home are given the same protections under the Human Rights Act as those in residential care. In the conclusions of their report they offer to work with, and support, local authorities in understanding and delivering care that respects peoples’ rights and dignity; and, recommend better guidance as to the choices available to the elderly, and their families, be made available.

Should Go For Keyword Domain Or Branding Domain?

Should go for Keyword Domain or Branding Domain?

by

Joe Xu

When you want to choose a domain name, the first problem you might facing is what type of domain name you should use? it is keyword domain or brand domain? You want the internet user to remember your website because of your domain name or ranking at the search engine is more important?

Brand Domain

You will found interesting is, a lot of well known and successful websites do not use keyword as their domain name. These online businesses have chosen to go with a completely original domain, and brand it. A few success examples like Google, Yahoo!, Amazon, Monster, and eBay. These companies are successful because of their company brand was consistent and not because keywords got them to the top. Consumer recognize their brand, because of the quality of service or product they provided. They feel justified, and likely to buy from them. However, to build a brand take serious work and large amount of resource. You need time to build it.

Keyword Domain

A keyword domain is a domain chosen to take advantage of search engine traffic. By choosing a domain that matches a keyword search, we are able to rank higher for targeted keywords and thereby benefit from added traffic and more potential for sales. For example if you are selling toy from China then you may choose something like “chinatoy.com”. The companies who are success in using keyword as their domain name like Search.com and Job.com. From these two success examples, you can found that they are using single word as their keyword. But it seem difficult to get single keyword domain, that is short and relevant to your industry obviously that would be better, and I doubt you ll ever to get one unless you are ready to shell out thousands or perhaps millions just for the domain name.

So, which one should you go for? a brand based domain or keyword domain? For me, your decision is much depending on your business plan. If you web business will be used once by the visitor, and then most likely never used again, then keyword domain seem more logical. But if the return visit is very important for your business, then a brand based domain sound more helpful.

Furthermore, If you have a large offline advertising budget and the budget necessary to brand your company, then I will recommend you should go for brandable domain. If, on the other hand, you have a limited budget, I prefer you choose a keyword domain and let the search engines bring the customers to you.

Japan suggests dumping Fukushima waste at sea as radiation hits lethal levels

Monday, September 2, 2013

Radiation at Japan’s damaged Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant yesterday spiked to lethal levels around a leaking tank. Today the national Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) said contaminated water may be pumped into the sea.

Tanks holding contaminated water at the site continue to leak; operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) says up to 300 metric tons may have leaked from one tank alone. Radiation at that tank soared to 1,800 millisieverts per hour yesterday, a rate lethal to an exposed human in about four hours. Japanese law says nuclear workers cannot be exposed to more than 50 millisieverts in a year.

TEPCO says other locations at the plant have readings of 70–230 millisieverts per hour. Waste water totalling more than 300,000 tons has already been collected at the site; more is being stored at a rate of 400 tons per day. An unknown quantity of radioactive groundwater is flowing into the sea.

NRA boss Shinichi Tanaka told a press conference today that stored water may be pumped into the Pacific after treatment to reduce contamination to within legal limits. “I’m afraid that it is unavoidable to dump or release the water into the sea,” he said, adding “careless management” was being applied to the water by TEPCO.

The situation at Fukushima is changing everyday… The accident has yet to be settled down.

TEPCO first noticed a leak at the now-deadly tank in July but said it was minor and the NRA gave it a level one “anomaly” rating on the seven-part international scale. Last week that was raised to “serious incident”, level three, after TEPCO said up to 300 tons of water had leaked. The exact amount is unknown as there is no gauge to measure levels inside the tank and TEPCO staff had said water levels in the tank had remained constant.

Last week levels under the tank, where lost water is thought to have seeped into the ground, stood at 100 millisieverts per hour, and another at the facility had a level of 70 millisieverts per hour. TEPCO found another leak yesterday in a pipe between coolant tanks. Highly radioactive material was dripping out, but TEPCO says the leak is now fixed. Monitoring at the site has been increased since the original leak’s discovery two weeks ago.

Around 1,000 tanks are used to store water from the power plant’s coolant system, which was contaminated when three reactors melted down after a tsunami in March 2011. Around 160,000 people were evacuated in the worst nuclear disaster since 1986. Tanaka said “The situation at Fukushima is changing everyday… The accident has yet to be settled down.”

The new radiation involves beta rays, TEPCO said, which can be stopped with a sheet of metal. Water treatment has extracted caesium from the tanks but other radioactive elements remain. TEPCO’s equipment to remove other contamination is out of action due to filter corrosion after a few months of operating, but the government has demanded it be returned to service this month.

None of the tanks have monitoring equipment and TEPCO’s initial procedure involved two employees manually checking each tank over a two-hour period. Since the tank was found to be leaking the total monitoring staff has increased from ten to 60, and patrols are carried out four times a day instead of twice a day.

Prosecutors brought criminal charges against TEPCO and government officials including then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan for their handling of the crisis formed after the tsunami. Daily newspaper Sankei Shimbun today claimed all charges, brought after local residents complained, were to be dropped. Sankei Shimbun suggests a formal announcement may come within days.

Kansai Electric Power today began shutting down one of only two reactors still generating power in Japan, reactor #3 at Oi Nuclear Power Plant, for mandatory inspection. The other, Oi’s reactor #4, is to be permanently switched off this month. When the accident began nuclear energy supplied a third of Japan’s power requirements, but in the aftermath of Fukushima the nation has switched to fossil fuels.

NHL: Penguins rally, defeat Senators in shootout

Tuesday, March 6, 2007

Pittsburgh Penguins 5 4 Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators thought that the game was over. Coming into the third period, the Senators led the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1, dominating every aspect of the game. After only one goal by Colby Armstrong, Ray Emery would blank the Penguins for the next 45 minutes the game. Things spiraled out of control when Marc-Andre Fleury allowed Mike Fischer, Christoph Schubert, and Chris Kelly to score in under 10 minutes, stopping only 4 out of the 7 shots he faced, and was pulled before the end of the first in favor of backup goaltender Jocelyn Thibault. Thibault’s only mistake of the game came at 4:32 in the second period, when the Senators’ Dany Heatley scored a power play goal to make it a 3 score game. After Heatley’s goal, the offensive show the Senators had been putting on suddenly vanished. Backed by Thibault’s strong play in net, Penguins rookie Jordan Staal scored his NHL best 7th shorthanded goal to make it 4-2. Still down by multiple goals, recent acquisition Gary Roberts scored at 11:02, to narrow the margin to 1 goal. 1 minute and 8 seconds later, Ryan Malone tied it up for his 14th goal of the season.

After a scoreless overtime period, Pittsburgh’s Eric Christinsen and Ottawa’s Dean McAmmond both scored to even the shootout at one goal apiece. Sidney Crosby, who won Sunday’s game in Philadelphia in a shootout, would get the chance to win it for the Penguins. Crosby took the puck and beat Emery on the right side to lift the Penguins to the overtime victory, 5-4.

Is A Sole Proprietorship Right For You?

Submitted by: David Newton

Of all the different forms of business, the sole proprietorship is the simplest. Because it is a one person business it isn’t constrained with the same regulations as larger corporations. If you have the next great concept and are motivated to chart your course with a carefully thought out business plan, you may well be on your way to business ownership. You needn’t have a grandoise plan that will consume your every waking hour. Sole proprietorships consist of freelancers, contractors and consultants to name a few. Many of whom work their businesses in their spare time.

The ease of starting a sole proprietorship is much less taxing than if you owned a larger company and had to cut through miles of red tape. You don’t even have to go through state registration as larger corporations do. Some cities do not even expect registration of single owned and run companies.

The headache many companies endure with quarterly taxes can be skipped over since you are only required, in most instances, to fill out a simple 1040. You probably won’t need an accountant for this. Many tax programs, including Tax Act Online will even guide you through losses and profits, self-employed tax assumptions and more.

The advantages of sole proprietorships are vast:

1. Starting or stopping with ease. To start with you may purchase the tools or equipment needed to get you off the ground running. Mary Kay business owners usually purchase what is called the Cadillac kit for under $500. With simple word of mouth and a few business cards they quickly see the return on their investment. For others it requires a simple small office lease or power tools. Not loving it? Want out? Stop. It’s that simple. Pack it up, store it and walk away. You don’t have to sell out to a partner or vote on it. You simply quit.

2. You answer only to yourself. It’s so much easier to get motivated for the day when you know you’re doing this for yourself. Sure, there will be mistakes along the way, but you only have to face yourself. And the rewards are sure to be great along the way.

3. Enjoying the luxury of being your own boss. There is no greater motivation than knowing it is your name at stake. To know that it is within your power to singlehandedly ensure your own success is elating.

4. The heritage you leave behind. Generations of people after you will continue to build on your dreams and your success.

5. It’s all yours. Next to being your own boss, nothing feels greater than knowing it is completely within your power to earn as much or as little as you choose. The best part of that equation? You share all your profits with – you and only you (minus only the cut your Uncle Sam will take, but hey…)

6. Work when you want, where you want, how long you want. It is completely up to you how many hours you choose to put into your business or when you cut your losses and walk away. Sole proprietorship means you are in charge, you make the decisions, including how long you continue your business.

7. Write-offs. Tax Act Online will walk you through these too. Business meals, office space, tools, mileage…the write-offs are virtually endless.

8. The bottom line. Larger businesses have the responsibility placed on them to pay into workman’s compensation, unemployment, higher taxes. As a sole proprietor you are only responsible for you and your taxes are taxed as your personal income. While you will have to pay quarterly, this is a small price to pay and far outweighs the cons of business ownership.

Ask around. You can learn from others mistakes and successes by simply speaking with other business owners. Chamber of Commerce meetings are a great place to meet business owners and learn from their experience so that you are better equipped for success with your business.

MLB: Yankees’ Phil Hughes earns first win

May 2, 2007

20-year-old pitching phenom Phil Hughes cruised through hitters in just his second start for the New York Yankees, but the end result created even more frustration for the organization and fans everywhere.

Hughes retired 19 Texas Rangers without allowing a hit on Tuesday at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Established big league stars such as Kenny Lofton, Mark Teixeira and Michael Young could not solve the youngster’s blazing fastball or sharply biting curve. Hughes was on the verge of history. Even as his pitch count rose, the Yankees allowed him to keep firing. “He was fine,” manager Joe Torre said of the 2004 first round draft pick. “We were going to allow him to go 100 pitches last time, so I didn’t think that would be a problem.”

Just when the Yankees thought they found an answer to their early struggles, the organization was treated to an agonizing sight. After Teixeira fouled off an 0-2 pitch with one out in the sixth inning, Hughes grabbed his leg, having suffered a hamstring injury. His no-hit bid ended there (Texas would break up the no-hitter in the eighth inning off reliever Mike Myers), though he did earn his first big league win in a 10-1 Yankee romp over Texas. He walked off the mound under his own power, but will reportedly miss 4-6 weeks.

Hughes voiced his frustration afterwards: “It’s tough. It puts a damper on the whole thing.” He added, “I’m at a point now where our rotation really needs it,” referring to his presence on the New York pitching staff. Several Yankees have already voiced their excitement for the righthander’s chances in the big leagues. For his part, Yankees star Jason Giambi compared him to Roger Clemens during Spring Training: “He looks like a young Rocket.”

The Yankees are currently just 10-14, thanks in large part to injuries that have befallen pitchers Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano and Jeff Karstens. In a related story from today, the Yankees fired strength and conditioning coach Marty Miller. Reportedly, this was out of general manager Brian Cashman’s concern for the alarming number of hamstring injuries so far this season.

Wikinews interviews Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine

Friday, April 11, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.

Find The Best Dentists In Park Ridge, Il

byAlma Abell

Finding the right dentist can often be difficult at times. This can be due to a variety of reasons, one of which being the cost which is high on many people’s lists. Without an affordable way to get dental care, families run the risk of significant discomfort and pain if they experience any tooth infections or other dental problems. This is why many families in the Park Ridge area rely on Northwest Point Dental, found at Northwestpointdental.com, for both reliable and affordable dental care. Without the proper dental care that is both readily available and affordable, a simple cavity could quickly turn into an infected tooth over a short period of time.

When it comes to having an infected or impacted tooth, the pain can often be excruciating. Without a reliable dentist to take care of the tooth, many patients suffer for months without any relief. This can result in severe consequences for their health overall, as well as put their life at risk if the infection enters the bloodstream. Visiting a dentist to get this looked at is often the only way to get rid of an infection properly. They can prescribe pain relief medication and antibiotics to clear up the infection in and around the tooth. For an impacted tooth, there could be an infection inside the tooth or around the gums surrounding it. In the case of an impacted tooth, the dentist may have to drill or cut away at the tooth and gum line just to extract it safely.

Many dentists in Park Ridge IL prefer to get to an infected tooth before it gets too badly damaged due to decay. In the event that the tooth has been damaged too far, there are still methods of restoration that can help restore the patient’s chewing capability. In many cases, the replacement procedure works out better for the patient’s overall dental health. One of the most common choices for replacement of a damaged tooth is for Dentists in Park Ridge IL to use implants. Dental implants are porcelain teeth that are anchored to the jawbone with metal anchors. These anchors stimulate bone growth like the original tooth’s roots, promoting fresh bone growth over time.
