Voters in the Scottish constituency of Airdrie and Shotts are to go to the polls on May 13 to elect a replacement member of parliament (MP) to the United Kingdom House of Commons.
The outgoing MP for the seat is Neil Gray — a representative of the pro-independence Scottish National Party — was resigning to run in the Scottish Parliament election, which was to occur on May 6. Gray won the seat with 45.1% of the vote at the 2019 general election, winning 13.1% more than the second placed candidate Helen McFarlane of the Scottish Labour party, who received 32.0% of the votes.
One of the eight candidates running in this constituency is Jonathan Stanley of the Scottish Unionist Party. Stanley was selected as the prospective parliamentary candidate for this seat in September, after it was announced Gray would be seeking nomination in the Scottish Parliament. Stanley is also running in the Scottish Parliament election, running as a list candidate in the Lothian region for the Alliance 4 Unity party.
Wikinews spoke to Stanley about important issues issues both nationwide and in Airdrie and Shotts.
Stanley provided two links each alongside the answers to the first two questions. For the first question, these were opinion pieces written by him, and for the second, these were press releases from a think tank Stanley is involved in. Those four links are cited in the external links section.
The first opinion piece addresses housing, calling for, among other things, social housing to be restricted to those who have resided in the UK for ten years or more, a 20% stamp duty on houses sold to foreigners, and abolishing income tax relief for “buy to let” mortgages. The second opinion piece addressed a hate speech law passed by the Scottish Parliament, and said it threatened freedoms and “families[‘] privacy and security of their homes”.
The two press releases concerned COVID-19. The first, published in late January 2020, called for mass flu and pneumococcal vaccination for high risk groups and the banning of flights to and from China, except medical relief flights. The second, published on 15 March 2020, called for a number of things, including the closure of the UK border, a national lockdown, Universal Credit for all during the crisis, a guarantee of essential utilities, and national procurement of ventilators.

Yes, it was really easy to build my own solar panels. It’s true I am very pleased with the results. However they said I wouldn’t spend more than 200$. When I checked my spending, I saw that my total was about 204$. For a perfectionist like me, that 4$ I spent over my budget took half a star from my Earth4Energy review. Now let’s see where the rest of the stars come from.
For those who don’t know what Earth4Energy is, I will make a short explanation first. When you search the Internet or your local library about solar panels and alternative ways to generate power for environmental or economical reasons, you can either find technical documents with detailed explanations only understandable to engineers or abstract information vaguely telling you about the history and uses of alternative power sources. Earth4Energy solves your information problem and presents a do it yourself guide for people like me, who don’t want to spend thousands of hard earned dollars just to save money in the long run. Earth4Energy is a complete guide anyone can follow about building your own solar panels and wind turbine with a fraction of money you would spend on a commercially available system.
Earth4Energy is basically an electronic book supported with video tutorials and other useful stuff. It includes every piece of information one can need for building his or her own power source for the whole house. When you get the package, you will find included a 70 page e-book with videos that show the finest details about the work ahead. This do it yourself experience is consisted of 6 parts. The first part is an introduction to solar energy. From environmental impact to economical gain, everything about alternative energy can be found in this part. Then the book jumps right into the most important part for me, which is building your own solar panel. This part includes diagrams and instruction videos, reducing the chance of misunderstandings and miscalculations to zero. In the part 3 which is named ‘Solar Help Package’ you will learn how to calculate energy needs of your house, how to use this knowledge to determine the number of panels, and so on. Before starting your project, you must digest this part and make decisions about your needs. The last chapter of solar energy part of the package is the instruction videos which will make you job much easier.

The fifth part is about wind turbines. You can have a wind turbine along with your solar panels. Wind blows at all hours of the day and your wind turbine generates energy independent form the hours of sunlight. Therefore you can consider this as a side project. The last part of the package is a 2 hours educational series about solar power and its uses in our houses.
In the beginning of this article I wrote it was an Earth4Energy review but I can confidently say that the product doesn’t need a review because it has everything needed to build an efficient power source with affordable prices.

Jayant Patel, wanted for manslaughter, grievous bodily harm and fraud in Australia, was arrested by FBI agents in Oregon, United States and is scheduled to face an extradition hearing on April 10.
According to an affidavit filed by US prosecutors, Patel, previously restricted from performing surgery in the US due to “professional misconduct”, lied about his professional history in order to work at Bundaberg Base Hospital in Bundaberg, Queensland.
Patel performed surgeries at Bundaberg that are alleged to have directly led to the deaths of several of his patients, including one procedure which he had previously been banned from performing in Oregon. The incidents led to Patel being nicknamed “Dr Death”.
If successfully extradited to Australia, Patel “will get a fair trial”, according to the Federal Member for Hinkler, Paul Neville, whose electorate includes Bundaberg, although the extradition may take some time due to Patel’s US citizenship.

Since the United States presidential election in November of 2004, viewership in the 25-54 age bracket of Fox News has fallen from over 1,000,000 in October to under 450,000 in April, according to the Daily Kos, a liberal weblog.
Ratings for cable news stations have fallen globally since the election, but most have since stabilized, making Fox’s continuing decline unusual. CNN’s ratings, as an example, increased 27% in April. Fox still leads CNN in this demographic by nearly 35% however, with CNN only managing to reverse its viewership decline in March 2005.
The FOX News Channel is a US cable and satellite news channel. It is owned by the Fox Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. As of January 2005, it is available to 85 million subscribers in the U.S. and to further viewers internationally, broadcasting primarily out of its New York City studios.
According to the BBC, FOX News’ profits doubled due to “patriotic coverage” of the Iraq conflict, with as much as 300% increase in viewership, with 3.3 million average daily viewers.
The 2004 election coverage by FOX News ranked higher than the next two cable news competitors combined. For President Bush’s address, FOX News rated 7.3 million viewers. NBC, CBS, and ABC rated 5.9, 5.0, and 5.1, respectively.

Tips on filling out Bankruptcy Forms
by
Gen WrightBankruptcy is a severe process that you would need to put a lot of contemplation, but once you decide to go with this route it is best idea to get prepared for filing bankruptcy forms correctly. It would make the process easier if you have a list of your assets and debts in advance. Here are few tips to completing the forms to save time and energy.
Get your forms typed
It could be different depending on the state, but most courts prefer that your bankruptcy forms be typed, not handwritten. Manual or automatic typewriter was popular about a decade ago, but nowadays almost everyone has personal computer, therefore it became easier to fill out the form using computer. Ask your local court they accept a handwritten bankruptcy forms, or if they have other options you can choose such as online filing. There are forms online that you can fill out using computer and send it via electronic filing.
Know your Local Court
It is common that every bankruptcy court has its own rules and regulations as wells as way of handling things. Therefore it is best for you to ask your local court’s preferences as it might change over a period of time. You can always call or write to the local court when you need more information to make things clear. It is always better to ask than assume.
As technology develops in all area, you may find that your local court will require you to submit the original copy of the petition only one time. Nowadays many courts are moving toward digital record of cases instead of paper ones. At some courts, they will scan your original documents and keep them in the permanent storage, creating multiple electronic copies at a later time. It is all possible due to technology innovation. In that case, you will only have to follow your local court’s directions.
Know your local court’s requirements and follow its rules and guidelines. Also be ready to make changes to your petition when you’re filling out forms, so that you meet their requirements.
Answer questions to your best
Try not to leave any questions unanswered, but fill out as best as you can. Most of bankruptcy forms have a check box where it specifies “none” as an answer. If you still can’t find it, just put “N/A” as not applicable indication.
The trustee might assume that you didn’t complete the bankruptcy forms in case you leave any sections blank. If the question is not clear or doesn’t apply to your situation, then put “N/A” in the first blank, and it will be much clearer than leave it empty.
Disclose everything whenever possible
If you have trouble categorizing a debt or asset on a form, do the best you can and make a note next to your entry that you’re uncertain.
If you are having a hard time how to categorize a debt or asset, do your best to fill out the forms. When in doubt, put down a note stating that you are not certain on that specific items or questions. That way your trustee will be able to sort through those unclear items and put them in an appropriate place later. Try not to leave things out just because you don’t know the answer right away.
Be honest and careful
When you fill out bankruptcy forms, it is better to oversupply information rather than leave them with many questionable empty spots. Even if it looks repeating multiple times in your documents, information is always welcome to trustee’s eyes. The more information you provide in the form, the less will your trustee doubt, suspect and question about your documents.
If you have anything that you fail to disclose upfront, it will make your case dismissed in worst case. Be careful when you put down the lists of all of your assets, because it is very important process and you can’t get lazy about it even if you become tired.
If you don’t take your paperwork seriously it will increase the chance of dismissing your case in the end. At the same time, you would run the risk of losing your assets if you fail to get them listed completely in the forms, which you could have kept if you were more careful.
Make use of continuation pages
When you run out of room on a particular page while filling out forms, you can simply create continuation page of your own by adding another page of the same style. You can make copy of the page you want using original copy of the form you are filling. Make sure that you write down your name on top of all the pages of the entire bankruptcy forms and make a note that it is a continuation page if you choose to use it.

The Pirate Bay, a file-sharing website based in Sweden, seeks to purchase its own island nation in an attempt to escape copyright laws. A group of people has launched a campaign to collect money via the Internet to acquire a former British sea platform situated in the North Sea, six miles (9.6 kilometers) off the British coast.
The Pirate Bay states that the platform, named Sealand, will give users an easy way of sharing files protected by copyright in other nations. According to the statement made on the website, those who invest in purchasing Sealand will receive citizenship in it.
The platform was occupied in 1967 by the associates and family members of Paddy Roy Bates, a former radio broadcaster and former British Army Major, who now form its royal family. Prince Roy and Princess Joan Bates and their son Prince Regent Michael are willing to sell the platform for £65m. The royal family claims that it is independent and outside of any country’s jurisdiction.
The sovereign status of the platform is disputed. The Government of the United Kingdom extended the territorial waters from 3 to 12 nautical miles after 1987, placing Sealand in its jurisdiction. However, Prince Roy simultaneously expanded the territory of Sealand and claimed continued independence. (See Sealand on Wikipedia.)
Hired estate agents from Spain estimate the price of the floating island to be about 504 million pounds. The Swedish website mentioned that it was looking for alternatives to acquire Sealand. It also mentioned that if the “Internet-pirate” community is not able to buy Sealand, it will look for another small place to claim as its own.
The Pirate Bay website was closed for some time in May 2006 due to Swedish police raids. The site was later re-opened from the Netherlands before moving back to Sweden.
5 Things of IoT Security
by
Dr Rajiv Srivastava
The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items entrenched with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity which enable these objects to connect and exchange data. Each thing is exclusively identifiable through its entrenched computing system but is able to inter-operate within the existing Internet infrastructure.
IoT security is the area of endeavor concerned with safeguarding connected devices and networks in the Internet of things.
The Internet of Things involves the increasing use of objects and entities known, in this context as things — provided with unique identifiers and the ability to automatically transfer data over a network. Much of the increase in IoT communication comes from computing devices and embedded sensor systems used in industrial machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, smart energy grids, home and building automation, vehicle to vehicle communication and wearable computing devices.
The main trouble is that because the idea of networking appliances and other objects is relatively new, security has not always been considered in product design. IoT products are often sold with old and unpatched embedded operating systems and software. Furthermore, purchasers often not succeed to change the default passwords on smart devices — or if they do change them, fail to select sufficiently strong passwords. To improve security, an IoT device that needs to be directly accessible over the Internet, should be segmented into its own network and have network access restricted. The network segment should then be monitored to identify potential abnormal traffic, and action should be taken if there is a problem.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly emerging as the manifestation of the Networked Society vision: where everything that benefits from a connection is connected. But the assumptions of trust which formed the backdrop to the early development of the internet no longer apply in the early stages of IoT development. Privacy and security concerns are ever increasing, especially given the growing significance of IoT in corporate, government, and critical infrastructure contexts.
So, five main things you should know about IoT are:
1.Cost Savings
In addition to the optimal utilization of energy and resources, the IoT helps alleviate the problems associated with bottlenecks, breakdowns and system damages. IoT mainly proves to be very helpful to people in their every day routines by making the appliances communicate to each other in an effective manner thereby saving and conserving energy and cost. Allowing the data to be communicated and shared between devices and then translating it into our required way, it makes our systems efficient.
2.Communication
IoT allows physical devices to stay connected and better communicate, which creates greater quality control. IoT encourages the communication between devices, also famously known as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication. Because of this, the physical devices are able to stay connected and hence the total transparency is available with lesser inefficiencies and greater quality.
3.Automation and Control
Automation leads to consistency in tasks, quality of service and control of day-to-day tasks without human intervention. Machine-to-machine communication also helps maintain transparency throughout the process. Due to physical objects getting connected and controlled digitally and centrally with wireless infrastructure, there is a large amount of automation and control in the workings. Without human interference, the machines are able to communicate with each other leading to faster and timely output.
4.Efficient and Saves Time
The machine-to-machine interaction provides better efficiency, hence; accurate results can be obtained fast. This results in saving valuable time. Instead of repeating the same tasks every day, it enables people to do other creative jobs.
5. Privacy and Security
As many of our daily appliances, machines and services become connected to the internet, much more information is readily available. It makes it harder to keep confidential information out of the hands of hackers and other unauthorized users. Since there is involvement of multiple devices and technologies, there is monitoring by multiple companies, which directly questions the security over privacy issues. Data storage and retrieval also becomes a prime concern for the companies as all of them are involved at the same time. In case of keeping a single company, it may lead to a domination question.
Ultimately, you have to agree that the Internet of Things presents new technological opportunities across various dimensions. If properly implemented, it could offer a host of new possibilities for your business as well.

In early May, Wikinews extended an invitation to Vitaly Filipchenko, an independent candidate in the 2021 New York City mayoral election, set to take place November 2nd, alongside other candidates. Filipchenko answered some questions about his policies and campaign during a phone interview.
Filipchenko, registered on the New York City Campaign Finance Board as Vitaly A. Filipchenko, is the first Russian candidate for New York City mayor, being born in Tomsk, Siberia in 1973, according to news agency Sputnik. He has since naturalised as a United States citizen. According to the web site, Filipchenko has been educated in road construction and maintenance and owns a moving services company; he describes himself on his web site as a “small business owner”. On his web site’s platform page, he says that “[m]y English may not be perfect – but my platform is.”
Incumbent Democrat mayor Bill de Blasio, who won re-election in the 2017 New York City mayoral election by 66.5%, cannot run for a third term under term limits. As of April 28, 22 candidates are currently running, the majority of whom are also Democrats. Ahead of the June Democratic primary for New York City mayor, a poll conducted May 23 and 24 by WPIX and Emerson College of 12 Democratic candidates with a margin of error of 3.2 per cent has former commissioner for the New York City Department of Sanitation Kathryn Garcia and Borough President of Brooklyn Eric Adams leading with 21.1% and 20.1%, respectively.

Nico Rosberg won the opening race of this year’s Formula 1 season in Australia yesterday. TV commentators spoke of “fascination throughout the field” as big names retired and new names proved themselves.
Former champion Lewis Hamilton qualified on pole but problems were evident by the second lap when he received a team radio message telling him “we need to retire… save the engine, save the engine!” Another followed rapidly, however, telling him to “just stay out, stay out, just keep on rolling”. Hamilton left the race on the fourth lap.
Reigning champion Sebastian Vettel did not fare much better, having only qualified twelfth, with engine woes of his own. He too quit the race in the early stages, staying behind to watch the race and, according to commentator and retired Scottish F1 racer David Coulthard, learn what he could from the sidelines.
Vettel and Hamilton were not the only stars retiring early. Veteran racer Felipe Massa was rammed from behind by Kobiashi’s Caterham, sending both cars out and prompting deployment of yellow flags for several laps while the debris was recovered. The crash was triggered by Kobiashi clipping Kimi Raikkonen, damaging the front of Kobiashi’s car. Raikkonen stayed in the race and managed to finish eighth. The first ten cars over the finish line score points towards both the driver’s and constructor’s championships.
Coulthard and fellow commentators believe Kobiashi, who took responsibility for the accident, may receive points on his racer’s licence in a new system to deal with transgressions introduced this year. Kobiashi called the crash “My mistake[… I] should have braked earlier, and I apologise to Felipe”. Massa said Kobiashi “cannot do a start like that, every time” he does so will lead to an accident.
More drama followed shortly after when Valteri Bottas clipped a wall on lap 10, breaking the rim of his back-right wheel. The rim was left on the track, followed shortly thereafter by the tyre off the wheel. The safety car was deployed for several laps until the debris was recovered. Despite the setback Bottas climbed back up the standings and finished in sixth place.
Many drivers, including cars at the front of the pack, took advantage of the safety car period to do pit stops. Some are now considering using less fuel than the maximum allowance in a move the FIA never expected technologically possible when drafting the rules several years ago.
It was a day for débutantes at Albert Park, a street circuit where racing took place in close proximity to busy public roads. Newcomer Kevin Magnussen scored third place on his first F1 race, while fellow rookie Daniil Kvyat came in tenth and became the youngest-ever F1 points scorer. Kvyat takes the record from Vettel by several months while Magnussen becomes the first Dane on an F1 podium.
|
[it is] such a pleasure to have such a fast car |
|
|
Not every débutante was so lucky; Caterham driver Marcus Eriksson dropped out of his first race after being radioed “Stop the car, stop the car, engine oil pressure”. Established racers Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean, both Lotus drivers, also stopped with technical trouble. All three cars pulled up at the side of the track on different laps, each triggering yellow flags. Despite the retirements, fourteen cars finished which was more than some commentators were expecting.
Hamilton was upbeat about his retirement, saying “It’s tough for everyone but that’s the way it is” and adding “We’re not the only ones [to have difficulties]”. Vettel was more pessimistic, claiming this is “going to be a long season”. Asked about the cause of his engine troubles, Hamilton said “One of the cylinders, I think, was not firing”.
The race was unusual from start to finish, having been shortened by one lap after the first start was aborted by amber lights instead of just green. The end is more controversial; home driver Daniel Ricciardo scored his first-ever Australian Grand Prix podium finish in second place but was later disqualified for an alleged breach of fuel regulations. Ricciardo had been the first Australian driver to stand on the podium in his home country since Formula 1 brought the event into the championship format used today.
His disqualification is not final, however. His team, Red Bull, have vowed to appeal. If the appeal fails all the drivers below him move up one position, meaning first-time entrant Magnussen will have come in second place and Kvyat will be ninth. That would see Sergio Perez score a point for Force India by moving into tenth. Perez’s race was hampered early by a puncture picked up in the opening lap.
|
I’m really proud of what I did today. There are more positives than negatives |
|
|
Ricciardo was reported to the stewards by technical delegate Jo Bauer who claimed his car “exceeded consistently the maximum allowed fuel flow of 100kg/h”. 100kg is also the maximum fuel allowed on board cars, a new limit set for this season. The fuel flow rule is also new this year; F1 cars averaged about 170kg/h last year.
Ricciardo was disqualified after five hours of steward deliberations. Red Bull have hit back with a statement saying many teams have found the FIA’s fuel flow meter to be faulty. They say they are “confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations.” Today Andrew Westacott, chief executive of the Australian Grand Prix, said the appeal outcome may not be known for weeks.
Prior to Ricciardo’s disqualification, the remaining point-scorers were Jensen Button in fourth, Fernando Alonso in fifth, Nico Hulkenberg in seventh, and Jean-Eric Vergne in ninth.
Racers and fuel rules were not the only things fresh for this race. Williams are on the back of their worst-ever season and have changed their livery to brighter, whiter cars. Another new innovation is the introduction of red lights on the rear of cars that blink when the vehicle is not using electricity, warning the car behind of possible deceleration. F1 cars also now sport hybrid turbo engines.
Rosberg, speaking after what is his first Australian victory, said it is “Such a pleasure to have such a fast car.” He came a full 24 seconds ahead of Ricciardo. It is also the hundredth victory by an F1 car powered by a Mercedes engine.
“Whatever the outcome I’m really proud of what I did today”, Ricciardo said as he awaited the stewards’ disqualification decision. “There are more positives than negatives”.
